BARBADOS
Settled by the British in 1627.  African slaves worked the sugar plantations established on the island until abolition of slavery in 1834. Led to independence from Britain in 1966 by Errol Walton Barrow.
Economic Notes: Dependent on tourism, light manufacturing, off-shore finance and information services. Sugar production continues to decline.
