History
Located in the Windward Islands of the Caribbean, north of the South American coast, Christopher Columbus was the first European to discover Grenada in 1498. The original Amerindians were destroyed by French and British colonists during the last stand at Caribs' Leap on the northern tip of the island. The island was settled by the French in 1650, and was alternately ruled by the English and French until 1783. The island was then ceded by the Treaty of Versailles recognizing British control. Grenada remained a separate British colony.
